Season preview: Everton
What lies in store for the Toffees in the 2011/12 campaign?
Hopes and fears Everton have moved on from the struggles of 10 years ago, and it’s fair to say they have more hopes than fears going into 2011/12. The Toffees finished seventh last term (just four points off a Europa League spot), and boss Moyes has called for investment to move the club on. Everton beat United in the FA Cup semi in 2009, and cups provide their best chances of glory.
You’re the boss On limited funds and resources, David Moyes has stabilised the club and it now boasts a fair number of international stars. His managerial pedigree has attracted the attention of a host of other clubs, but the former Preston boss has remained loyal and is steadily building a top-flight force.
Who’s the man? Despite missing part of the campaign through injury, Tim Cahill once again provided the spark in Everton’s well-oiled machine last season. The Australian scored nine goals in 22 league appearances last term, and don’t be surprised to see corner flags being rattled in celebration just as frequently in 2011/12.
Young guns Seamus Coleman’s peers rate him, with the 22-year-old Ireland international shortlisted for PFA Young Player of the Year. A bright future is also expected for Jack Rodwell, who looks the part in the Toffees’ experienced midfield.
In and outs Although the Everton rumour mill is in full flow, Eric Dier is the only joiner to date, back on-loan from Sporting Lisbon.
James Vaughan passed him through the door as he moved to newly promoted Norwich City.
Away-day heaven or hell? An intimidating Goodison atmosphere has made United’s recent visits fairly difficult, and we’ve not picked up a win there since 2007/08. It’s a match-up that has been given a keener edge ever since Wayne Rooney’s transfer to Old Trafford in 2004.
Well I never… Everton have won more FA Cup matches than any other club.
